When soil pH drops, aluminium becomes soluble. A small drop in pH can result in a large increase in soluble aluminium (figure 1). In this form, aluminium retards root growth, restricting access to water and nutrients (figure 2). Notice that substances that are gases at room temperature and pressure become less soluble with increased temperature, and the substances that are solids at room temperature and pressure tend to become more soluble when the temperature rises.
